SANTAQUIN, Utah (KUTV) — The man accused of fatally striking a Santaquin police officer with a semi-truck and fleeing the scene has been previously convicted of attempting the same thing in Oregon, according to court documents.
Officials reported that on March 26, 2009, Michael Aaron Jayne attempted to kill an Oregon State Police officer on State Highway 66 by trying to run him over with his vehicle.
Jayne was convicted in 2010 for attempted assault in the first degree and possessing body armor as a felon — he was allegedly wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the incident. He had pled guilty to both counts in October 2009.
Jayne also faced one count of attempted aggravated murder in relation to the incident, but he was not convicted.
Court documents added that Jayne had previously been convicted of a felony in California, where he was reportedly from, and threatened law enforcement officers there.
According to an article from the Great Bend Tribune, Jayne was also involved in an incident in Kansas in which he fled from police on July 3, 2012.
During that incident, Jayne allegedly stole a pickup truck and engaged in a high-speed chase that involved K-9 units and a helicopter.
The Great Bend Tribune stated Jayne was considered armed and dangerous during the search for him, and flyers with his photo were distributed to homes in the area.
"A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper stopped Jayne just south of Stockton at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for speeding and was given a name that turned out to be false," the report read. "As the trooper started to approach the vehicle a second time, he sped away."
In Utah on Sunday, 42-year-old Jayne was also accused of stealing a truck during a pursuit that ensued after he fatally struck Santaquin police Sgt. Bill Hooser.
The incident began just before 6:30 a.m. when Hooser and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper performed a traffic stop on a semi-truck after someone reported seeing a person standing on the back of it.
As the traffic stop was being made, the semi, which had been traveling northbound on I-15 in Santaquin, pulled forward and turned around to face the wrong way before accelerating and striking Hooser along with both patrol vehicles.
Hooser was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jayne fled on foot to a nearby convenience store where he allegedly stole another semi-truck. Officials said he left the semi-truck in Mona before stealing a Ford pickup truck, which he later abandoned in Mt. Pleasant.
A white Ford pickup truck was stolen next, which he eventually crashed during a high-speed pursuit near Vernal and was taken into custody.
A shelter-in-place order had been issued in the area while officials worked to apprehend Jayne.
