Authorities say an apartment fire in New Jersey has claimed the life of a 12-year-old and sent six others to the hospital.

Officials say the fire happened late Sunday night at the Fox Meadow Apartment Complex in Burlington County.

Upon arrival, authorities found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the apartments.

Despite some residents going door-to-door alerting their neighbors to the danger, a 12-year-old boy died.

According to police, the child's mother and seven-year-old sister were among the injured and are listed in critical condition at the hospital.

Officials say the heat was so intense that it melted some of the siding on a nearby building.

In total, 16 units were damaged before the fire was brought under control just before midnight.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
