Owners of the iconic Silver Drive In in Richland are looking for fresh faces to keep the operations running. But a promise has been made to keep the facility open until a new owner is found.
Owner Rick Rosko says at 72 years old it’s time for him to pass the torch to someone else who will keep the drive-in open for decades to come.
“I’ve got a 4-year-old daughter. Whenever the movies are right for her, we love to bring her and let her see something up on the big screen while having a fun and inventive night out in the back of our vehicle,” says patron Randy Oest.
It’s something Rick Rosko doesn’t want to see leave the area.
“Somebody who likes the drive-in,” says Rosko, the managing partner. “I’m hoping that’s who shows up and has the passion for movies and people.”
Rosko is trying to sell the Silver Drive In for just under $700,000. He and a team of partners took over in 2005.
“It's time. I’m not that young anymore and I think I want to do something easier or maybe some travel,” says Rosko. “I’ll find something to do.”
Patrons of the drive-in would be devastated if the screen were to go dark. The drive-in is one of only a little over 300 left in the country.
“I only come a couple of times a year, but I would be absolutely devastated not to have the option,” says Oest. “I think it is so great that my daughter can come and play with the other kids that are here, enjoy a movie in a space that allows her to get some energy out.”
Rosko has invested a lot into the establishment over the years, and is sad to see this chapter of his life come to an end.
“Yes, I am,” says Rosko. “And who knows, who knows, maybe a whole bunch of people don't want a drive-in movie theater, so it might not go and I could live with that also.”
